How to measure your locket for a photo
There is no standard locket photo size. Every locket is a little different, so measure the one you have. A ruler with millimetre markings gives the most accurate result.
- Open the locket and find the recess where the photo sits. If a clear cover or a thin metal ring holds the photo in, measure the opening behind it.
- Measure the width at the widest point, side to side.
- Measure the height from top to bottom. For a heart, measure from the top of the curves down to the point.
- Enter both numbers in the tool. If you land between two values, use the smaller one: a photo that is a fraction small still sits flat, while one that is too big buckles.
How to print locket photos at home
- Load glossy or satin photo paper. Thin photo paper is easier to fit than thick card.
- Press Print in the tool, then set Scale to 100% or Actual size and turn off Fit to page.
- Measure the 10 mm bar at the top of the sheet. If it measures exactly 10 mm, every photo on the page is true size.
- Let the ink dry for a few minutes before you cut.
Printing locket photos at a photo counter
No photo printer? Choose 6×4 photo in step 4, download the file and order it as a standard 6×4 print (Officeworks, Kmart or any photo kiosk). The file is made at 300 DPI in exact 6×4 proportions, so a standard print brings the photos back at true size. If the kiosk offers borders or cropping, switch them off.
Cutting and fitting the photo
- Cut along the grey outline with small, sharp scissors. Curved nail scissors make hearts and ovals easier.
- With the 1 mm trim margin on, the picture runs slightly past the line, so a cut that wanders a little still leaves no white edge.
- Test the fit. If it catches, trim a sliver at a time until it sits flat.
- Press the photo into the recess. A small dab of glue stick on the back stops it shifting; skip it if a cover or ring already holds the photo in place.
Locket photo questions, answered
What size is a locket photo?
There isn't one standard size. Locket frames vary from piece to piece, so measure the inside of yours where the photo sits: the width at the widest point and the height from top to bottom. Enter those numbers in the tool above and it prints your photo at exactly that size.
How do I print a picture small enough for a locket?
Crop the photo to your locket's shape and size in the tool above, then print the sheet at 100% (Actual size) rather than Fit to page. The 10 mm and 1-inch bars at the top of the sheet let you check with a ruler that the printer didn't scale it.
How do I get a photo into a heart locket?
Choose Heart in the tool, enter the width of the frame and its height from the top of the curves to the point, then put the face in the middle and print. Cut along the outline, test the fit, trim a sliver at a time if it catches, and press the photo into the recess.
Can I print locket photos at Officeworks or Kmart?
Yes. Pick the 6×4 photo option, download the file and order it as a standard 6×4 print (Officeworks, Kmart or any photo kiosk). The file keeps exact 6×4 proportions at 300 DPI, so the photos come back at true size as long as cropping and borders are switched off.
What paper is best for locket photos?
Glossy or satin photo paper gives the sharpest picture and resists smudging. Thin photo paper sits flatter in a shallow locket than thick card. Plain paper is handy for a quick test print to check the fit before you use photo paper.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser: your photo is cropped and turned into a print file on your own device and is never sent to IfShe or anyone else.
Do IfShe lockets come with the photo already inside?
Yes. With an IfShe photo locket you upload your picture when you order, and our workshop prints it to fit the frame and sets it inside before shipping, so there is nothing to print, cut or glue.
